Tenaliram was one of the mantras (Ashtadiggajas) of King Krishnadeva Raya, the founder of the Vijayanagara Empire, the king's chief advisor and king-jester. He was one half-pillar and pride of the king's royal assembly (Bhuvan-Vijayam). The reign of Krishnadeva Raya is believed to date from 1509 to 1529. Krishnadeva Raya is counted equivalent to great persons such Ashoka, Samudragupta and Harshavardhana.
